CLEVELAND, OH (AUGUST 2, 2013)— Canton’s new charter school has selected a founding administrator.

I CAN SCHOOLS has chosen Cleveland native Teresa Sayles to be Head of School for Canton College Preparatory School. Teresa comes to I CAN SCHOOLS from the LeBron James Club at Boys and Girls Clubs of America, where she served as Unit Director. Sayles obtained her BGS in Special Education and Teaching from Kent State University. She served as a teacher for Akron Public Schools for four years before moving to Arlington Christian Academy in Akron, Ohio in 2006.

When Sayles began at Arlington Christian Academy, the K-8 school had just 57 students. In 2008, she became principal; by her departure in 2012, over 120 students were enrolled at the school. While facilitating this improvement, Sayles was simultaneously pursuing a MEd in Organizational Leadership through Cleveland State University, which she successfully obtained in 2012.

Sayles began as the Unit Director of the LeBron James Club in October 2012. While she truly loved her job at the youth development program, Sayles began to realize she was missing her true passion.

“I’ve found that education—the structure of education—is really where I thrive,” Sayles revealed. For Sayles, producing responsible scholarship is a pressing issue. “Too often, schools will push children through to graduation who are not academically prepared for college,” Sayles noted. “Responsibility for these children’s education often ends when they are handed their high school diploma.” I CAN SCHOOLS’s mission—graduating 100% of students from a four year college or university—is a philosophy that Sayles believes should be the norm, not an exception.

The Cleveland native decided to accept the position as the founding Head of School in Canton because of the area’s vast potential. “Canton is a sports town, but it can also succeed as an educational town,” said Sayles. With the opening of Canton College Preparatory School and continuous improvement in Canton City Schools, Sayles believes this vision may quickly become a reality.

I CAN SCHOOLS performance statistics include:

• After three years of attending I CAN SCHOOLS programs, 100% of the students are performing at or above grade level.
• 100% of ICS eighth grade graduates have entered a college preparatory high school.
• I CAN SCHOOLS students outperform their peers in public school districts on achievement tests.
