I CAN SCHOOLS OFFERS NEW, QUALITY EDUCATIONAL CHOICE TO AKRON, CANTON, AND MAPLE HEIGHTS

CLEVELAND, OH (JULY 31, 2013)— This fall, Akron, Canton, and Maple Heights will have a new choice in education that focuses on one thing: academic preparation for high school, college, and global opportunities.

Until this year, I CAN SCHOOLS—a non-profit charter school management organization—was focused entirely on filling the educational gap in Cleveland, Ohio. After years of successfully serving students in their four Cleveland locations, co-founders Jason Stragand and Marshall Emerson decided to expand their network of accessible educational options to Akron, Canton, and Maple Heights.

“We were often when asked by community constituents, parents, and families when I CAN SCHOOLS would be moving into those locations,” said Jason Stragand. “It isn’t that public school options in our new locations are not good, but that families deserve a choice if they want one. In Cleveland, we fill the educational gap by offering high-quality, platinum-level education; we want to help provide the same to students in Akron, Canton, and Maple Heights.”

The new campuses will share the network’s teaching model, which has a proven record of success. In addition to a heavy emphasis on mathematics, reading, and writing, students are required to take Spanish, art, music, and physical education courses. A ten-month school year, free tutoring program, and Saturday school keep children on track.

I CAN SCHOOLS performance statistics include:

  • After three years of attending I CAN SCHOOLS programs, 100% of the students are performing at or above grade level.
  • 100% of I CAN SCHOOLS eighth grade graduates have entered a college preparatory high school.
  • I CAN SCHOOLS students outperform their peers in public school districts on achievement tests.

While many schools in the state are cutting extracurricular activities to save money, I CAN SCHOOLS is continuing to expand such programs. Free extracurricular activities like student government, hip-hop dance, basketball, and chess club are offered at all campuses. Students are also heavily involved in community service projects developed by school leaders.
